He was confronted by police, a firefight ensued, and he died but not before killing at least 49 people in the club and wounding another 53.
Rumors have been rampant on social media that the gunman, identified as Omar Mateen, did not act alone.

But the Orlando Police Department has been steadfast in its assertion that Mateen was the only shooter.
Much of the dialogue online about the rumor of multiple shooters seems to come from a post by someone going by the name Cody Agnew on Facebook.
In his post, Agnew claimed he knew a woman who survived 12 gunshot wounds from the Pulse mass shooting, and that she told him there were two other shooters who escaped from the club.

“They are still out there, and they are armed and dangerous,” the post reads. “The media is not reporting this, because they don’t want to scare everyone, but I think it’s important that people know.”
The post was shared more than 60,000 times before it disappeared. Later, Agnew’s entire Facebook profile was deleted.
It was not clear if it was Facebook that took down the post and account or if Agnew did.

Still, hundreds of people continue to circulate screen grabs of the post on Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Imgur and many other social media sites.
Some people perpetuated the rumors, while others worked to discredit them.
OPD took to Twitter Monday morning and bluntly addressed questions of multiple shooters.
“Rumors of multiple shooters are unfounded. The one shooter, Omar Mateen, is dead,” OPD tweeted.
