Some inventive Cobb County students could win their high school $20,000 and make their dream a reality.
The students have already won $5,000 from Verizon for Kell High School and tablets for themselves because of their idea for an app.
On Monday, Verizon named them the best high school team in Georgia in its nationwide app development contest for high and middle school students. That makes the Kell team eligible for one of eight national awards, which would come with a $15,000 prize for the Marietta school.
If selected, the students would also work with an MIT group to further develop their app and make it available for download.
The app would be named “The Breeze,” and is inspired by teenagers looking for jobs. It would include area job listings along with reviews from previous employees. The app would also filter openings based on criteria like salary rates, work hours, location and students’ interests.
A panel of experts assembled by the Technology Student Association selected 94 team finalists from more than 1,800 teams nationwide.
When voting opens on Jan. 16, you can vote for the Kell students right here. Voting runs through Feb. 14. The winners will be announced the day after voting closes.
Winners will present their completed apps at the annual Technology Student Association National Conference in Orlando, Florida, in June.

Houston County.
