Decatur’s school board recently approved the new configuration of its elementary school boundaries beginning with the 2019-20 school year. The vote was unanimous, and the map chosen—from among four options—was also favored in an online community opinion poll and by the boundary committee that’s been meeting since October.

In 2019-20 City Schools Decatur’s five existing lower elementary schools drop a grade and go kindergarten through second grade, with the 4/5 Academy at Fifth Avenue (F.AVE) going 3-5. A second 3-5 school gets built on Talley Street with construction beginning in several weeks.

One of the key features in the option chosen is that all lower elementary boundaries remain unchanged. Other features include 76 percent of Winnona Park going to Talley Street, and 24 percent of Winnona to F.AVE. All of Westchester and Oakhurst goes to F.AVE, and all of Clairemont and Glennwood to Talley.

There is one minor alternation to the original option many saw, with everyone on McDonough Street now zoned for F.AVE.

The new Talley Street building will get named this fall after a series of community meetings.
