Woman killed, son hurt in Dallas Highway wreck

A Paulding County mother was killed Wednesday and her teenage son critically injured when she turned left in front of a pickup truck in Cobb County, police said. Delores Sibert, 46, of Hiram was driving a Toyota Avalon eastbound on Dallas Highway just before 1 p.m. when she attempted to turn left into the Village Green Shopping Center just west of Due West Road, Cobb police Sgt. Dana Pierce said. Pierce said Sibert turned into the path of a Nissan Titan pickup truck that was westbound on Dallas Highway.

Austell disc golf course to open May 21

The Austell Parks Department will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. May 21 for the Frog Rock Disc Golf Course, 6205 Spring St., Louise Suggs Memorial Park behind Wallace Barbecue off Veterans Memorial Highway.

Disc golf is based on the rules of golf, using flying discs thrown toward elevated target baskets. The 9-hole course, with dual tee pads, will accommodate beginner, intermediate and advanced players.

Mitchell House manager to speak on Sunday

Caitlin Whiteaker, manager of Margaret Mitchell House in Atlanta, will speak Sunday at a meeting of the Philadelphia Winn Chapter National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Whiteaker has been with the Atlanta History Center for five years and manager of the Margaret Mitchell House since April 2012. She is a graduate of Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., where she studied English literature.

Commissioners admit open meeting violation

Fulton County Commissioners Wednesday admitted they violated the state Open Meetings Act when a majority of commissioners attended a town hall meeting without proper public notice in February. By a 4-1 vote, commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding with the state Attorney General’s Office admitting the violation. They agreed to take steps to comply with the law in the future. Under the agreement, the commissioners who attended the meeting will not face a penalty, but they may be subject to fines of up to $2,500 for subsequent violations. David Wickert

Forsyth planners to hold hearing May 28

The Forsyth County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on proposed changes to the county’s Unified Development Code at 6:30 p.m. May 28 at the County Administration Building, 110 E. Autrey Mill offers cellphone tours

The Autrey Mill Nature Preserve and Heritage Center in Johns Creek has launched cell phone tours of the 43-acre site. Visitors can dial a phone number and enter a site code to hear information about the preserve and its historic buildings. Recordings provide information on the history of the buildings, including their previous residents and interesting features that distinguish each building. The service was created through a $3,000 grant from Sawnee EMC.

Subpoena demands student information

Atlanta Public Schools is notifying parents and students that it will have to turn over students’ education information in response to a subpoena related to the criminal case of former educators accused of cheating on standardized tests.

The school system said in its announcement that the information will be made available to court officials starting today unless it is restrained by a legal authority.

Thirty-five former Atlanta educators, including Superintendent Beverly Hall, face charges including racketeering and theft based on accusations that they inflated students’s scores. Mark Niesse

APS may sell former high school

Atlanta Public Schools may sell the site of the former North Fulton High School for $6 million to the private school that currently leases it, Atlanta International School.

The proposed sale of the Buckhead property would help the school district raise money to help plug a $61 million budget deficit projected for the 2013-14 school year.

Atlanta International School, a 1,113-student International Baccalaureate school, has leased the property from the city school district since 1995. Mark Niesse

Special Olympics games open today

Special Olympics Georgia will host its annual State Summer Games for more than 1,800 athletes and coaches this weekend at Emory University. Athletes will compete in aquatics, athletics, flag football, gymnastics, soccer, table tennis, tennis, and volleyball, with medals awarded throughout. The opening ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m. today at Emory University’s McDonough Field, 616 Asbury Circle. The games are free and open to the public. PAWS Atlanta offering low-cost pet clinics

PAWS Atlanta, a DeKalb County animal welfare group, is offering weekly low-cost pet health clinics.

The group, formerly known as the DeKalb Humane Society, can provide spay-neuter services as well as vaccinations and pet dental cleanings.

Police chase ends in death of Henry teen

A Henry County teenager was killed when the car she was a passenger in crashed while fleeing from police, the Georgia State Patrol said Wednesday. Marion Ahlexus Shore, 19, of McDonough, died in the Tuesday wreck when the car she was in left I-85 and crashed in Franklin County, a spokesman for the GSP said. The driver of Toyota was identified as Thanquarius Calhoun, 21, also of McDonough. He was flown to a Greenville, S.C., hospital, where he was in critical condition. Woman struck, killed on interstate

A pedestrian died after being struck by several vehicles on a Clayton County interstate Wednesday night.

The woman, whose name is being withheld until relatives can be notified, was hit just after 10:30 p.m. on I-285 at I-75, Clayton County police spokeswoman Danielle Rosa said.

The incident was the second pedestrian fatality along I-75 in Clayton County in less than a week.

Three arrested in Craigslist robbery

A man, a woman and a juvenile were arrested Wednesday following the armed robbery of a woman who was responding to a Craigslist ad, Clayton County police said.

A woman said she had come to Jonesboro to buy a 1993 Toyota Camry that was listed for sale on Craigslist, but three suspects produced a gun and took her money, police said. The Hapeville man and the Henry County woman confessed, Clayton County police said.

Stockbridge halts sanitation surcharge

The Stockbridge City Council voted Monday night to remove a $4 monthly sanitation surcharge for all home-based occupations regardless of business classification. City officials said that the fee had previously been assessed to every home-based business with a city business license, even if no trash was being generated by the business itself.
