A rally and vigil aimed at reducing violence the Clayton County will be held Saturday at Independence Park in Jonesboro.

The noon to 3 p.m. event will be at the park where an 18-year-old Mundy's Mill High School student was shot Dec. 31 as she sat in a car with friends listening. Three gunmen attempted to rob Cherish Williams and two friends when Williams was shot. Williams later died. She is the seventh young person between the ages of 11 and 18 to die in Clayton by gunfire since October.

The rally also will debut a nonviolence campaign called Stand Up Clayton.

“We’ve got to make sure we stand up against violence collectively as a community,” said District 3 Commissioner Felecia Franklin Warner, who came up with the idea for Stand Up Clayton with other community residents.

The park is at 8970 Thomas Road in Jonesboro.
