Comment: Yang has been the great buzz kill of this tournament, eliminating Seth Reeves and Ollie Schniederjans of Georgia Tech. On Friday, he took care of the youngest player left in the field, 17-year-old Cameron Young, 2 up. Wedel ousted the oldest remaining player, 36-year-old Nathan Smith. This is uncharted territory for both California collegians, neither ranked in the top 600 in the world. Wedel has yet to see the No. 18 at the Highlands through four rounds of match play, having closed out his competition before the last hole.
Corey Conners, 22, Listowel, Ontario vs. Denny McCarthy, 21, Rockville, Md.
Tee time: 8:20 a.m.
Comment: Both players are loaded with U.S. Amateur experience. Despite his youth, McCarthy is playing in his sixth Am. Conners is in his second consecutive Amateur semifinal. Conners is a junior at Kent State, but will fly Canadian colors on his cap and shirt. McCarthy is a senior at Virginia, who tied for sixth at the last NCAA championship. Both are ranked in the top 50 in the world.
