Atlanta United learns pool of Champions League openers

Atlanta United’s pool of first-round candidates in next year’s Champions League was whittled down Wednesday.

CONCACAF announced the two pots from which teams will be drawn Dec. 9. The event will be televised on TUDN.

Pot 1 includes the teams from MLS and most of those from LIGA MX.

Pot 2 includes the remaining teams.

Teams drawn from Pot 1 will face the teams from Pot 2.

Pot 2 teams are San Carlos (Costa Rica), Deportivo Saprissa (Costa Rica), Alianza FC (El Salvador), Comunicaciones FC (Guatemala), CD Olimpia (Honduras), FC Motagua (Honduras), Portmore United FC (Jamaica) and Club Leon (Mexico).

Pot 1 teams are Montreal Impact, Club America, Cruz Azul FC, Tigres UANL, Atlanta United FC, Los Angeles FC, New York City FC and Seattle Sounders FC.

Atlanta United will play the first match on the road and host the return match. The first legs will be held Feb. 18-20. The return legs will be Feb. 25-27.
