Q: When do defensive players in pass coverage no longer have the right to collision or to contact eligible receivers down field? - Harold Law, Marietta

A: "Once the receiver begins to run a pass route, he is considered a receiver and not a blocker. At that point, he is not allowed to have his route altered by contact by a defensive player. In press coverage, when a defensive back lines up close to the line of scrimmage, facing the receiver, there can be initial contact, but once that contact is broken, the wide receiver is in his route." - James Frey, Gold Coast Football Officials
