A motorcyclist was killed Thursday after crashing into a Georgia Department of Transportation HERO vehicle on I-75.

The fatal crash occurred around 1:30 p.m. in the southbound lanes just past the Northside Drive exit. The motorcyclist struck the response vehicle from behind as it was cleaning up debris in one of the travel lanes, according to GDOT.

The HERO vehicle was stopped with its lights and lane closure sign on, a Georgia State Patrol spokesperson confirmed.

The motorcyclist was identified as 29-year-old Jonathan Delarosa of Marietta.

“We extend our thoughts and prayers to all those involved,” GDOT spokeswoman Natalie Dale said.

An investigation into the incident brought the evening commute to a standstill for hours. Shortly before 5 p.m., HERO units began picking up their cones and the crash scene was cleared.

The crash occurred in the southbound lanes of I-75 near the Northside Drive exit.
