WASHINGTON — Tonight marks the return of the annual Congressional Baseball Game, and Georgia is well represented on the teams’ rosters with the addition of three rookies.

U.S. Sen. Jon Ossoff is playing with the Democrats, and U.S. Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene and Andrew Clyde will be batting for the Republicans. They join GOP colleague Barry Loudermilk, who has played on the team for years and was at a practice in 2017 when a gunman shot lawmakers and some officers handling security.

The game, which raises money for charity, was canceled in 2020 because of COVID-19. But it has a reputation for bringing the best out of political foes in a friendly rivalry.

That is why Greene’s inclusion is somewhat surprising given her history of confrontations with Democrats, including an incident Friday that turned into a shouting match. However, her name on the roster hasn’t caused much of a stir on either side.

The game also happens to fall in the middle of a tense time on Capitol Hill. Democrats have been unable to agree on a $3.5 trillion social services and climate change bill while also clashing with Republicans on how to pass measures to provide temporary government spending and avoid a default on federal debt.
