An Atlanta attorney with a doctorate in medieval history will take a larger role on President Donald Trump’s defense team, according to the President’s top defender.
Andrew Ekonomou, 69, is one of a handful of lawyers assisting Jay Sekulow, the main attorney representing Trump in a probe into Russia's meddling in the 2016 election. Sekulow told Reuters on Tuesday that after the departure of Washington attorney John Dowd from Trump's personal legal team, Ekonomou will assume a more prominent role.
Ekonomou, who works under contract as an assistant district attorney in Brunswick, also has private practice in Atlanta. He earned his law degree at Emory University in 1974 and later returned to earn a doctorate in Medieval and Byzantine History in 2000 at Emory, where he has also taught.
“I’ve been tested plenty of times,” Ekonomou told Reuters. “Just because you’re not a Beltway lawyer doesn’t mean you don’t know what you’re doing.”
