A 2-year-old boy is slowly recovering after arriving at a Wichita hospital Tuesday night not breathing because an octopus was lodged in his throat, according to police.

The boy's condition has been updated from serious to good and he hasn't shown any signs of injury caused by long-term oxygen deprivation to the brain, Wichita police Lt. James Espinoza told The Wichita Eagle Thursday.

His 21-year-old mother found her boyfriend, identified by KAKE as 36-year-old Matthew Gallagher, performing CPR on the child when she returned home from work on Tuesday night, the newspaper reported.

Medics rushed the boy to the hospital where doctors found a two-inch baby octopus stuck in his throat and injuries to his face, according to The Wichita Eagle.

Gallagher attempted to explain how the octopus got stuck and the boy injured, but police said his statements didn't match evidence.

Authorities booked Gallagher into the Sedgwick County Jail on suspicion of child abuse, according to KAKE. He has since been released, jail records show.

The octopus appeared to be intended for sushi, according to The Wichita Eagle.
