Bursts of color — punches of purple and touches of teal green — on the walls bring unexpected elements into Bill and Candace Kaspers’ contemporary Atlanta residence. That’s exactly what Candace desired. The color choices add to Candace’s artistic expression in the home, using her artwork and creations such as a light fixture made of collected pieces of blown glass in the kitchen.

“I like the surprises that are thrown into the mix,” she said.

Residents: Bill and Candace Kaspers. Bill is an attorney; Candace is a business and life coach and a jeweler

Location: Northeast Atlanta

Size: About 2,500 square feet, three bedrooms, three baths

Year built: 1974

Year bought: 1974

Renovations: Upgrades to the home over the years have added more square footage, expanding their second-floor master bedroom and bathroom (for must-haves such as a Jacuzzi), and a new bathroom between guest rooms on the first level.

Contractor: Michael Reynolds of M.R. Renovation

Architectural style: Modern. The couple were drawn to the asymmetrical design of the home, which was new."We fell in love with it because it was modern and we were from the Northeast [New York], and it just very much appealed to us," Candace said."But it ironically had been on the market for six months without being sold. At that time, Atlanta was very traditional, so modern houses were not very appealing [to other buyers]."

Favorite architectural feature: The second floor, which has the master bedroom and den/office and is open to the first level."Both of those look out over into the living room,"she said.

Interior design style: Modern

Interior designers: Peggy Covell and Guerry Mashburn

Favorite interior design feature: Arranging artwork and furniture in unexpected ways. For example, in some rooms, Mashburn placed artwork – much of which was created by Candace – above each other or side by side. In the master bathroom, a cabinet (purchased at the American Craft Council Show at the Cobb Galleria Centre) is positioned on the marble surrounding the Jacuzzi."I knew I wanted it in the bedroom. I wasn't sure where it was going to end up,"she said. "When you walk into the bedroom, you look right down [into the bathroom] and see the marble expanse and the Jacuzzi, so it's a nice surprise."

Favorite outdoor feature: Their back patio, which was designed by Jim Gibbs, a well-known Atlanta landscape architect and a founding member of the Atlanta Botanical Garden. The patio overlooks Nancy Creek and woods."That has also been a great source of pleasure and joy for us,"Candace said. The area has flagstone flooring and is spacious enough for a U-shaped eating area, which the couple often use for cocktails, and a dining table in another section, both of which have Chippendale-style furniture and cushions of Sunbrella fabric.
