The annual Porches and Pies festival isn't happening until October, but the call for bakers to join the event's sixth annual bake-off will be opened on March 14.

That date is no mistake, either, as it marks the globally celebrated Pi Day. The day is named for the mathematical constant π, the first three digits of which are 3, 1 and 4.

Everyone from pastry chefs to home bakers are welcome to enter the Adair Park Today-organized contest and they can opt to make savory or sweet pies.

Matt Marcus, owner and executive chef of Southern-inspired eatery Watershed on Peachtree and Kenna Scott, owner of Party Execs, will return to the judges panel. Scott’s company was among the catering winners of Wedding Wire’s Couples’ Choice Awards in 2017. Marcus, meanwhile, has been included in the guide, “Best Chefs America.”

Scott and Marcus will be joined by new bake-off judges Chris Taylor and Paul Arguin who wrote the baking book, “The New Pie: Modern Techniques for the Classic American Dessert.” They also have the distinction of winning more than 500 baking awards, including the 2017 Best of Show Award at the National Pie Championships.

Participants can enter as a team or individually and entry fees begin at $10 for home cooks and $20 for pastry chefs. Details on how judging will be handled at this year's event will be posted on the website.

Last year’s festival saw metro Atlanta bakers submit 44 pies of the sweet and savory variety. The festival, which is free and open to the public, will be held Oct. 10 from noon to 5 p.m. in  Adair Park.

Adair Park Today puts on the event. The nonprofit organization represents residents and business owners in the historic southwest Atlanta neighborhood. Unifying the neighborhood and aiding in the restoration of public works and services are counted in the organization’s mission.
