Twins born just 15 minutes apart in California have birthdays on different days, months and years.
Alfredo Trujillo was delivered first on New Year’s Eve at 11:45 p.m., and his sister Aylin Trujillo was born on New Year’s Day at midnight, according to reports.
“It’s crazy to me that they are twins and have different birthdays,” Fatima Madrigal, their mother, said in a news release by Natividad Medical Center. “I was surprised and happy that she arrived at midnight.”
Alfredo weighed in at six pounds, one ounce, while younger sister Aylin weighed in at five pounds,14 ounces, according to the release. Aylin is also Monterey County’s first birth of 2022.
Dr. Ana Abril Arias, a family doctor at Natividad Medical Group, said in the news release that “this was definitely one of the most memorable deliveries” of her career.
“It was an absolute pleasure to help these little ones arrive here safely in 2021 and 2022. What an amazing way to start the New Year!” Dr. Arias continued.
Being born as a twin is rare, accounting for just about 3 percent of all births in the U.S. each year, according to data from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Being born a twin in a different year is even rarer, estimated to be a one in two million chance, according to Natividad Medical Group.
