DUNWOODY

Friends of the Dunwoody Library Big Book Sale

Erasmus once quipped that he spent whatever money he had on books; anything left over went to less important things — like food and clothes. Luckily, this weekend’s Friends of the Dunwoody Library Big Book Sale means that you won’t have to break the bank trying to emulate such famed scholars. With approximately 25,000 items, there is something on the shelf for every reading taste — and budget, with most items priced between 25 cents and $2. Proceeds from the sale go back to the DeKalb County Public Library system and the Dunwoody branch.

4-8 p.m. May 29 (library members can enter at 1 p.m.), 10 a.m.-5 p.m. May 30-31.

WOODSTOCK

Wing and Rock Fest

Sure, they’re messy and take a little work, but isn’t digging into a giant platter of wings worth the effort? This weekend, Woodstock City Park will be the epicenter for the finger-lickin’ food when the ninth annual Wing and Rock Fest rolls into town. The free two-day event serves up wings from numerous local eateries, as well as two stages with live music, crafts booths, children’s activities and several teen bands. And just in case wings aren’t your thing, there will be concessions serving other food options. The highlights of the weekend: the People’s Choice award for best wings and the contest to see who can eat the most in two minutes.

Noon-10 p.m. May 31 and noon-6 p.m. June 1.

DALLAS

150th Commemoration of the Battle of Pickett’s Mill

The summer will be packed with events commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War in Georgia, and this weekend, the spotlight is on Paulding County, the site of several skirmishes as Union troops made their way into Atlanta. At Pickett’s Mill, visitors will see living history demonstrations at the park’s Prather Cabin and artillery firing exhibitions every half hour. Michael Shaffer, assistant director of Kennesaw State’s Civil War Center, and author and historian Brad Butkovich will lead guided walks through the park, and re-enactments of the confrontations in the area will be staged on both days.

Admission: $3-$5.50 (includes parking). 9 a.m.-7 p.m. May 31 and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. June 1.
