Dish of the Week: Bacon cheddar croissant French toast from Milton's Cuisine & Cocktails
I have to admit, I was jealous of the dish my husband ordered—the fried chicken and sweet potato waffles—which was artfully presented before us for brunch at Milton’s Cuisine & Cocktails in historic downtown Crabapple. But that jealously only lasted a brief moment, until I dove in to the first bite of mine—the bacon cheddar croissant French toast with jalapeno maple syrup. What it lacks in fancy presentation, this creative rendition of French toast more than makes up for in flavor—an enticing combination of sweet, salty and spicy. Pretty plating isn't necessary when you taste this good.
The dish comes with scrambled eggs and applewood bacon (you can also opt for jalapeño bacon if you like extra heat or sausage), but the real standout is the buttery breakfast pastry that’s dancing in a decadent jalapeno maple syrup (it's not in the least bit too thick or gloopy). Bacon and cheddar add ultimate comfort food richness to the croissant while jalapeno brightens it up with a nice kick. You’ll probably be tempted to neglect the eggs and focus on polishing off the French toast, which is filling and indulgent in a way that feels oh-so-Southern-brunch-ish. About halfway through, I thought I was ready to call it quits, but my fork kept digging in for “just one more” bite—over and over again. There’s something about the balance of sweet, heat and savory that makes this French toast ultra-satisfying and craveable. Wash it all down with a simple cup of coffee—or a Bloody Mary or Bellini if you need a little hair of the dog.
Milton’s revamped brunch menu features plenty of other new dishes to try too, with a mix of breakfast staples and inventive concoctions. Check them out for Sunday brunch sometime from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.
