North Georgia is in for a nice Tuesday as springtime weather takes hold.
Plenty of sunshine is in the forecast, and temperatures will be about average for this time of year, according to Channel 2 Action News. Atlanta is starting the day in the 50s, but it gets significantly cooler outside the Perimeter and into the northern suburbs. The mountains are in the 40s Tuesday morning.
Channel 2 meteorologist Brian Monahan said a jacket or sweatshirt may be warranted for the next couple of hours. By the afternoon, much of North Georgia should be in the upper 70s.
“You’ve got a day where you see 80 degrees or so for a high. That is a perfect late April afternoon,” Monahan said. “And the pollen count is low. We’re kind of in the sweet spot for springtime weather.”
With no rain in the forecast Tuesday, there should be plenty of opportunities to enjoy outdoor activities. A car wash may be on your to-do list now that pollen season is winding down, but Monahan said you may want to put it off another day.
“I’m sure you are ready to get your car washed,” he said. “Wednesday you may be able to get that done for free with some of the rain in the forecast.”
Metro Atlanta has a 90% chance of showers and storms Wednesday, according to Channel 2. Monahan said the day will start mostly dry with the possibility of a few sprinkles before the main event Wednesday afternoon.
“A line of storms is going to come through, and it’s going to quickly drop some heavy rain across North Georgia,” he said. “We could pick up an inch or more of rain in some neighborhoods Wednesday afternoon and Wednesday evening.”
The risk of strong to severe storms has increased, he said. Strong wind gusts, hail or a brief spinup tornado is possible.
“By Thursday, that rain is going to have moved out,” Monahan said. “It’s going to get cooler. We'll go from the 70s today into the 60s on Thursday. That cooler weather doesn’t last, though.”
After Thursday’s projected high of 67 degrees, Friday will return to the low 70s, according to Channel 2. Temperatures are headed for the upper 80s over the weekend.
There should be no weather impacts to travel Tuesday. For those hitting the roads, there are no early delays on metro Atlanta interstates, according to the WSB 24-hour Traffic Center.
Traffic conditions are expected to be lighter than normal through the day with Georgia under a stay-at-home order amid the coronavirus outbreak.
