ATLANTA, Ga., — Tennessee kicked off the season with a double-overtime 42-41 comeback victory over Georgia Tech.
Tennessee’s offense struggled out of the game, but the Vols put things together late scoring 28 points after the third quarter.
Running back John Kelly ran for 4 touchdowns and 128 yards rushing.
Wide receiver Marquez Callaway had a breakout game catching 4 passes for 2 touchdowns and 115 yards.
Vols coach Butch Jones addressed the media after Tennessee’s season-opening win. Here’s what he had to say:
- Opening statement: Team had to show grit to win the game. The Vols needed to play complementary football. Credits Callaway for a spark in the second half. Tennessee didn't turn the ball over which helped lead to the victory.
- On defensive tackle Paul Bain: The walk-on blocked the potentially game-winning 37-field goal as time expired. Had "a big hand" in helping the team win.
- On Callaway: Always plays with great consistency. Plays the ball very, very well in the air.
