Five Georgia Tech football recruits will be getting an early start on their freshman seasons.

Running back Travis Custis (Lovejoy High), cornerback Step Durham (Jacksonville, Fla.), defensive end KeShun Freeman (Callaway High), linebacker Tré Jackson (Lowndes High) and quarterback Matthew Jordan (Jackson, Ala.) all will enroll at Tech when the spring term begins in January. It will be coach Paul Johnson’s largest group of early enrollees.

Custis was actually part of the 2013 signing class but did not enroll due to NCAA clearinghouse issues that have since been resolved. Custis has been working out with a personal trainer three or four times a week, his father, Travis Custis Sr., said.

A desire to get a head start on football and school was the primary rationale given for the early enrollments, a growing trend in college football.

“Just so I can be there for spring (practice) and I can go ahead and get my feet wet and I have almost seven months on the other freshmen,” said Jordan, who took summer school in order to graduate early.

Freeman, who holds a 4.23 GPA, doubled up on AP calculus and statistics in the fall semester to enroll early.

“My teacher told me, ‘It won’t be Georgia Tech calculus, but it’s still calculus,’” he said.

There could be a sixth early enrollee. Running back Shai McKenzie of Washington, Pa., is taking his official visit to Tech this weekend and reportedly will enroll early at whatever school he chooses.
