Five college athletes tell us why mom means everything to them.
Ben Greene, Kennesaw State golfer
My mom is the best because she has always been there for me. Through every stage of my life, she has loved me for who I am and has supported me in all my endeavors. She is one of the hardest-working people I know and puts the family ahead of herself. I know that I can count on her for anything. I love you, mom.
Deon Hill, Georgia Tech football player
When the word “love” comes to mind, the first thing I think about is my mother. Strong, humorous, loving and courageous are a few adjectives to describe my mother. She has a heart of gold and the personality to make the shyest person feel at home and welcome in any type of situation. People say we act just alike. This is why I know I will become successful in the future.
R.J. Hunter, Georgia State men’s basketball player
I play the game of basketball for my family and my biggest fan, my mom. She has been there for all of my ups and downs. My mom has a basketball IQ, so we always talk about the game, and she loves it just as much as I do. I owe all of my successes to my mother. It is truly a good feeling when my mom is more happy for me than I am for myself. I appreciate her and her efforts to support me.
Trevor McBurnett, Georgia Southern football player
For the first few days, I didn’t want to think about it, but my mom was one of those kids (who grew up in a Korean orphanage). It was something I knew about her childhood. When I got home from the trip (to work on an orphanage in Honduras), she told me, “You don’t know the joy and happiness you brought to those children.” I know my mom has been through a lot. She loves me, and I know she would do anything for me. Considering the little love she was shown, it makes me appreciate her that much more.
Aaron Murray, Georgia football player
The first thing I think about my mom is how dedicated she is to my brother (Josh, 29), my sister (Stephanie, 21) and me. It’s tough having three kids who were always doing different sports at the same time and going every which way. She always coordinated that for us, getting us everywhere we needed to be. And she’s always been school-first: You’re not playing the game if you don’t get your schoolwork done. … She’s always the first one waiting on me to give me a big ol’ kiss and hug and tell me she loves me and how proud she is. She’s the best.
