Georgia Tech went through its 21st practice of the preseason Tuesday, training in full pads. Coach Paul Johnson gave a less-than-glowing review for the second consecutive day.

“It was OK,” he said. “This week’s dragging a little bit. Camp’s over, no game (this week). Just have to push through it.”

The defense enjoyed some levity with what is called the Hive drill. In it, coaches hide a ball in a pile of tackling dummies and blocking shields. Two players go into the pile and try to come out with the ball. Defensive coordinator Ted Roof selects eight players and conducts a single-elimination tournament.

“Coach Roof does it every once in a while to get a little competition going,” defensive tackle Patrick Gamble said, “basically just diving in there looking for the ball.”

Tuesday’s winner was linebacker Chase Alford.
