At least one of the assistant coaches for men’s basketball at Kennesaw State may remain on staff by virtue of his contract.
David Rivers signed a three-year deal in April 2014 that contains no provisions should the coaching staff change. Jimmy Lallathin, who was coach when Rivers signed his contract, resigned two weeks ago after being reassigned within the athletics department in early March. No reason has been given by athletic director Vaughn Williams or by Lallathin for his reassignment or resignation despite multiple queries.
Al Skinner was announced as Kennesaw State’s new coach on April 26. Skinner said last week that he hadn’t made up his mind about the future of the assistants. A department spokesman on Tuesday said that there are going to be changes to the staff, but it will be two weeks before decisions are made. Neither of the other assistants, Jon Cremins and Paul O’Conner, have contracts.
Rivers’ contract, obtained by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution through an Open Records Request, does contain provisions that he may be reassigned within the athletics department by the head coach following a periodic review.
Rivers was an All-American as a point guard at Notre Dame in the late 1980s before playing in the NBA and then in overseas leagues. Kennesaw State is his first coaching job.
Rivers was the only assistant not suspended for at least one game following an internal review last year after it was learned there was an impermissible workout of a player in July, 2014.
