Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson gave his good wishes to former South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier, who stepped down from his job Tuesday.

“Certainly, he’s an icon and he’s been a guy that’s been a real asset to college football with his personality and his coaching and all the things he’s accomplished,” Johnson said Tuesday after practice. “He’ll be missed.”

It is easily forgotten that Spurrier actually coached at Tech for one season, in 1979, his second coaching job. He was the quarterbacks coach for Pepper Rodgers for the one season and then moved on to Duke, where he became offensive coordinator, after Rodgers was fired.
