J.D. Williams has resigned as Georgia State’s defensive backs coach and special teams coordinator to accept an assistant coaching position at UNLV.
Williams’ family lives in the Las Vegas area. They didn’t move to Atlanta when Williams joined Miles’ staff in early 2013.
Williams is a former NFL first-round pick and played on four Super Bowl teams with the Buffalo Bills.
Williams came to Georgia State from UNLV, where he served a variety of roles from 2009-12.
“I think it’s a great opportunity for him to get back home with his family,” Miles said. “We thank him for the work he did while he was here. He’s a friend first.”
Miles said he won’t be in a hurry to hire Williams’ replacement. He said he wants to take his time while deciding what will be the best thing for the defense.
The Panthers have struggled on defense the past two years. During the recently completed season, Georgia State gave up 43.3 points and 497.1 yards per game. The cornerbacks had one interception.
The specials teams had net-punt averages of 31.9 yards on 60 punts and net-kick averages of 38.1 yards on 50 kickoffs. The return teams averaged 18 yards on 55 kickoffs and 11 yards on seven punts.
