A new battle started Thursday over where Georgia cancer patients can get care.
A state board gave initial approval to a rule change that could allow Cancer Treatment Centers of America to see more Georgia patients at its hospital in Newnan. CTCA’s Southeastern Regional Medical Center currently is required to attract 65 percent of its patients from other states.
The state Board of Community Health will take public comments on the rule change for 30 days and make a final decision in November. If it gets final approval, the state agency will authorize a change that the General Assembly turned down.
Georgia hospitals say the for-profit cancer hospital focuses on treating patients with generous insurance benefits and provides little care to people without insurance and those covered by Medicare and Medicaid.
