Former Gov. Zell Miller on Thursday swore in Hugh Thompson as the next chief justice of the Georgia Supreme Court. The ceremony took place before a packed audience in the state House of Representatives’ chambers at the Capitol.

Miller appointed Thompson, who lives in Milledgeville and was once a chief Superior Court judge of the Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit, to the state high court in March 1994. Thompson succeeds Carol Hunstein, who will remain on the court as one of its seven members. Miller also swore in Harris Hines, a former Cobb County judge, as the court’s new presiding justice.
