A key House panel Wednesday approved a mid-year budget that adds $1 billion in state spending over the next six months for everything from rebuilding roads to helping high school students start college early.
Much of the mid-year spending plan is identical to the proposal recommended by Gov. Nathan Deal earlier this month. The mid-year budget runs through the end of June.
The full House is expected to approve the budget Thursday. Lawmakers are moving quickly on the mid-year budget and the spending plan for fiscal 2017, which begins July 1, because all 236 lawmakers face re-election and want to end the session as quickly as possible.
The mid-year plan includes more than $100 million for K12 schools to pay for growing enrollment and $700 million for road projects. The extra transportation money was available after the General Assembly approved fuel and hotel tax hikes last year.
