Avondale Estates announced Wednesday that Atlanta-based South City has plans for developing the 3.17-acre parcel north of East College Avenue and east of Sams Crossing, between Sams and Hillyer Street. This extreme “west gateway” area was annexed into the city several years ago.
Initial plans call for 10,000 square feet of ground floor retail/restaurant and approximately 175 residential units over four stories, according to a city press release. Other amenities include one acre of open space including a gateway park, a rear parking deck, on-street parking, sidewalks and street trees.
South City is scheduled to give a public presentation of plans during the Feb. 24 commission work session.
The project could kick start development in a city that’s been continually frustrated by Euramex Management, which has owned 15 downtown acres for 16 months but has yet to make any public presentation.
The proposed South City development is two blocks east of the Columbia Ventures/MARTA/City of Decatur development, whose first-phase construction is scheduled to start in May and take about 18 months.
