Q: How did Christmas in July come about and what’s on tap for families at Marietta Square?
A: Christmas in July started in the south 84 years ago on July 24-25 in 1933 at a girls' camp called Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina, according to countryliving.com.
Christmas in July will return for it’s second year at Marietta Square on July 13. The event is presented by The Branding Project assisting the Center for Family Resources (CFR) and Cobb Christmas, nonprofits that serve local low-income families.
“Christmas in July is the perfect opportunity to celebrate everything that makes the Marietta Square such a fantastic place to work, play and live,” said Stephanie Coston, operations director for the Branding Project.
Glover Park will be decorated in festive, tropical fashion – trees strung with lights, decorated with leis and Hawaiian flowers and 50 flamingos decked out in Christmas attire.
There wouldn’t be a Christmas without Santa and he too will be dressed for the occasion. Photos with Santa in the gazebo will begin after his arrival at 10 a.m.
In exchange for a professional digital photo by Hadley(s) Photography, an unwrapped toy (no toy weapons) or cash donation benefiting Cobb Christmas is requested.
Santa will also be there for carriage rides around the park.
Music has been added this year, a mix of beach-themed and Christmas tunes. The Strand Ole Opry and Song of Atlanta (woman’s music group) will be performing.
“You know a lot of kids don’t get to see Santa during Christmas and it’s just a great opportunity to let kids see him during the middle of the year,” said Coston.
Santa’s mailbox will also be there for kids that want a jump start on their letters to Santa.
Joining in the yuletide cheer this year will be The Grinch and a Chick-Fil-A cow.
“It just makes sense to do something in a public way because it brings attention to CFR and Cobb Christmas,” said Coston.
Location: Glover Park on Marietta Square, 39-75 E Park Square, Marietta from 9:00am - 1:00pm.
Price: Free; toy or cash donations for Cobb Christmas welcomed.
