Ike's Cafe and Grill

1250 Tech Drive

Norcross, GA 30093

Score: 63

UPDATE: Ike's Cafe and Grill passed its Friday follow-up inspection — after failing its first follow-up inspection eight days earlier.

In the most recent inspection, the popular African restaurant at 1250 Tech Drive in Norcross scored an 89/B. The only violation noted by inspectors was "three dented cans."

That evaluation came just over a week after the June 2 reinspection in which the cafe scored a 58/U — which was lower than the original May 23 inspection that landed it in hot water (see below). During the June 2 inspection, officials noted numerous violations, including improperly cooling stews, "inconsistent" date marking and "multiple dirty dishes stored in the clean dish area."

On Tuesday, Ike's Cafe and Grill manager Perry Boakye said he wants customers to know they "have nothing to worry about."

"We have the same good tasing food that you're used to," he said. "We're taking [steps] to make sure that whatever happened never happens again."

ORIGINAL STORY: A popular Gwinnett County cafe failed its May 23 health inspection after officials reportedly found moldy food, flies and roaches in its storage areas.

Ike's Cafe and Grill, an African restaurant at 1250 Tech Drive in Norcross, received a 63/U.

According to the inspection report, "molded giner and yams" were found stored in the cafe's walk-in cooler. Officials also noted "multiple flies in the prep area and live roaches in the storage area." Additional violations included "multiple foods stored in uncovered bins," inconsistency in food dating, cracked storage bins and improperly cooling pepper sauce and spinach dishes.

A follow-up inspection will be completed within 10 days of Monday's evaluation, according to the health department.

Reached Tuesday morning, one of the restaurant's managers said someone would call The Atlanta Journal-Constitution back to comment on the inspection. As of early Tuesday afternoon, no one had done so.
