Georgia Department of Transportation’s District One office recently took home an award for a safety project completed last year in Hall County. The project to construct the reduced conflict U-Turn on Ga 53 at McEver Road was designed and managed by the district office. The project also garnered support from city officials in Gainesville and the Gainesville Police Department.

According to GDOT, “this intersection experienced 63 angle crashes during a five-year period resulting in over $16 million in crash cost to Georgians.” Since the improvements were made, there have been zero crashes, resulting in a 100 percent reduction in crashes.

The $74,938 undertaking was a quick response project and represents “a 22,000 percent return on investment.”

GDOT received the award Nov. 12 at the 25th Annual Transportation Summit hosted by the American Council of Engineering Companies of Georgia in Athens.
