Cherokee County has approved a property owner’s request to rezone her land to agricultural use so her family can legally keep a beloved pet pig.

Christine Gibson asked the county to rezone two acres at 281 Louie Lane, Canton, from R-80 (estate residential) to AG (general agriculture) to allow their family pets and occasional pet rescues. The Cherokee Board of Commissioners granted her request, with the conditions that the land not be used for a commercial kennel, commercial boarding or large livestock.

In a letter to the county, Gibson said her family has been rescuing and finding new homes for needy pets since 2009. Their pets currently include pigs and chickens. The family, including their two pigs, was featured in the September/October 2015 issue of Cherokee Life magazine.

“It was brought to our attention in 2015 by the zoning administrator at the time, Vicki Taylor Lee, that we needed to rezone to agricultural when one of our newly rescued pigs escaped and didn’t know its way home, and Marshal Eric Bastress visited our property,” Gibson said.
