Whether it happens this year or next Bill Stogner, senior vice president with Selig Enterprises, believes Decatur’s annexation plan will eventually pass.

“It’ll cost us more in taxes,” Stogner said, “but I think it’s inevitable.”

Selig is redeveloping the 57-year-old Suburban Plaza, a focal point of the city’s annexation map. Total redevelopment is 320,000 square feet, with 150,000 of that belonging to Walmart. Besides Walmart, Stogner said Selig has signed lease deals with LA Fitness, Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, HomeGoods, Ross Dress for Less and Starbucks.

Walmart will open by the end of the year, with the rest of Suburban opening by as early as next February.
