City Schools of Decatur’s K-12 enrollment explosion appears finally in some decline according to a recent report released by CSD Research and Analytics Director Heidi Whatley. A preliminary enrollment update—official enrollment figures aren’t submitted until October—shows the K-12 enrollment at 5,723 as of August 6. That’s an increase of 176 students over this time last year.
That growth isn’t negligible, with the increase nearly matching total enrollment of Glennwood Lower Elementary. Still, Whatley’s numbers indicate that growth is at least leveling.
For the six years prior to this one CSD added between 250 and 406 students per year from August to August. The 2013 K-12 enrollment was 3963, meaning there’s been a 30 percent increase since then. Compare this, however, to the decade from 2007 to 2017 when enrollment escalated from 2,473 to 5,328, or 53 percent.
Enrollment is up this year in grades K, 1, 3, 6, 8, 9, 10, and down in grades 2, 4, 5, 7, and 12. Every class excepting the 11th and 12th has over 400 students, and the largest class is the third with 497 (no CSD class has yet surpassed 500).
Whatley said she still doesn’t have a preliminary demographic breakdown.
