Cascade United Methodist Church gave Morris Brown College $22,000 Sunday to help the historically black college raise $500,000 to settle a debt with the U.S. Department of Education.
The federal government will eliminate the college's $9.9 million debt if it pays $500,000 by Aug. 24. The college had $365,000 by mid-July and leaders expect to raise it all.
The college owes more than $30 million to multiple creditors. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools revoked the college's accreditation in 2003, citing gross financial mismanagement.
