When the September 2009 flood came, Austell was among the hardest hit with the overflow of five major streams.

The city may receive future relief because of a new federal/local partnership approved recently by the Cobb County Board of Commissioners.

The county will spend $50,000 to begin the first phase of a three-year study with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers of this Sweetwater Creek drainage basin.

Federal funding will amount to $1.5 million over the next three years.

Cobb officials are hoping to receive funding from Austell, Powder Springs and Douglasville as well as Douglas and Paulding counties to share in the local cost.
