Public meetings planned on DeKalb tax rates

DeKalb County is announcing that property tax rates will likely increase for some government services, but overall rates will decline.

Tax rates for general funds and hospital funds are increasing by 25 percent, though total tax rates for all tax-funded services are declining about 2 percent. General and hospital tax rates are going up after they were temporarily reduced last year to keep the total tax rate steady.

Regardless of tax rates, rising property values will result in higher tax bills for many residents.

Interim DeKalb CEO Lee May has proposed a budget that shrinks the overall property tax rate from 21.21 mills to 20.81 mills. The DeKalb Commission is expected to vote on the proposal next month.

Three public hearings on proposed tax rates will be held at the Maloof Auditorium at 1300 Commerce Drive in Decatur. They’re scheduled for June 23 at 10 a.m. and 6 p.m.; and on July 14 at 10 a.m.
