A bill to incorporate a city of Stonecrest has been introduced in the Georgia House of Representatives.

The measure, House Bill 539, would create a municipality with about 50,000 people over 29 square miles in the area surrounding Stonecrest Mall and the city of Lithonia.

A University of Georgia study recently found that the city government would be financially feasible, paving the way for Rep. Dee Dawkins-Haigler, D-Lithonia, to introduce the legislation, which has been referred to the House Governmental Affairs Committee.

Stonecrest is one of six areas seeking legislative approval to become cities, along with Greenhaven, LaVista Hills, Sharon Springs, South Fulton and Tucker. All of them but Greenhaven and Sharon Springs have legislation pending in the Georgia Legislature.
