The University of Georgia, once again, experienced a rush of students seeking to enroll.

University officials announced Monday that more than 15,800 students from Georgia and across the nation applied for early-action admission. Of those applicants, 8,059 will be accepted.

UGA officials said the early applications were a record. Last year, UGA received a then-record 14,516 applications for early-action admission, an increase of almost 10 percent over the previous year.

The early-action application deadline was Oct. 15. Friday, applicants learned whether they have been admitted, denied or deferred to the regular decision pool through a university website page. The regular decision deadline is Jan. 15, and decisions are typically released in mid-March.

The university considers grade-point averages, test scores on college proficiency exams like the SAT and student essays as part of the criteria when deciding to accept a student.
