While playing at a friend’s house Thursday night in Henry County, a 12-year-old girl heard a knock on the door.

When no one answered, two gunmen fired at least a dozen shots at the home — one hitting the child in the neck.

On Monday, Layla Kendall was recovering in Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston’s intensive care unit after undergoing four surgeries.

Her parents are searching for answers, Channel 2 Action News reported.

“This is heartbreaking,” Latrice Cannon, Kendall’s mother, said. “It will put us at ease ... it will put her at ease.”

The child was playing games and cooking at a home off Pates Lake Way, which is near Jonesboro Road, when the gunfire erupted, AJC.com previously reported. Her godmother, Shawna, previously told Channel 2 she was in the home and had to administer aid until paramedics arrived.

“(I) kept her head, kept her stable, (and) kept talking to her, so she could respond until 911 could get there,” Shawna, who is a nurse, told the news station. “I had to do what I was trained to do, and that was to save her life.”

At least 12 bullets hit the house, and it’s unclear how many rounds were fired.

“We really just want to get these guys off the street,” Jantzen Kendall, the girl’s father, told Channel 2.

The two suspects are believed to have left the scene in a dark gray BMW. No description of the suspects was available, and it’s unclear why the home was targeted.

“I think we just want justice. We want answers,” Cannon said. “Somebody knows something, and they need to speak up.”

GoFundMe page was created to help the family with medical bills. As of Monday afternoon, the page had raised nearly $8,000.
