A Riverdale father wanted for allegedly shaking his baby, causing the infant to have several brain and retinal hemorrhages, turned himself in Monday morning, authorities said.

Armetrius Amari Terry flew to Georgia from Cleveland, Ohio, to turn himself in after his mother convinced him to, the Clayton County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

On Sept. 18, Terry was with the child for several hours when the infant suffered what appeared to be a seizure, the release said. He contacted the mother, who was at work, and told her the child was “stiffening up.”

When the mother returned home, the child was found stiff with labored breathing, and the child’s eyes were locked in a right-facing position, the release said.

The child was taken to a nearby hospital, and doctors said the infant suffered several brain and retinal hemorrhages that are consistent with shaken baby syndrome, the release said. According to the Mayo Clinic, shaken baby syndrome destroys a child's brain cells and prevents the brain from getting enough oxygen.

An investigation found that two similar incidents happened within a week with the baby showing the same symptoms, the release said. Both happened when Terry was alone with the child.

Terry faces charges of aggravated assault, first-degree child cruelty and family-violence battery, according to Clayton County jail records.

He remains in jail without bond, records show.
