Brookhaven is using millions of dollars to transform one of its parks, starting with the construction of a new splash pad.
The city held a groundbreaking ceremony Thursday afternoon to renovate Lynwood Park and its pool area, located at 3360 Osborne Road. The city anticipates the renovations, which include nearly $9.3 million in construction contracts, to take a year to complete.
Lynwood Park, the oldest Black neighborhood in DeKalb County, was given a historic designation in 2020, leading to the erection of monuments and plaques.
The improvements stem from a $40 million park bond referendum adopted by voters in 2018. In October, the City Council approved three contracts for the Lynwood Park improvements.
Integrated Construction and Nobility was given about $8.6 million to construct the new splash pad, pool, pool house, parking lots and perform landscaping and site work improvements. Advanced Sports Group was chosen to install a turf field for about $560,000, while GeoHydro Engineers was awarded roughly $83,000 for soil and construction material testing.

Once complete, the city will install a bronze recognition plaque listing the names of the “Lynwood Trailblazers,” the first group of Black students who integrated into the DeKalb County School District in 1968.
“The Lynwood Park upgrades will be the most the most transformative changes out of all of the Park Bond upgrades, and they will all be happening simultaneously,” Mayor John Ernst said in a previous news release. “We will be wrapping up the Parks Bond projects at Lynwood, which is the grand finale.”
