Brian Gregory will become the new men’s basketball coach at South Florida, according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.
Gregory spent this season as a consultant to Michigan State coach Tom Izzo after serving as his assistant from 1999-2003. He was also a Spartans assistant from 1990-1996. Gregory was head coach at Dayton (2003-2011) and Georgia Tech (2011-2016) before being fired last May.
Michigan State reached three consecutive Final Fours with Gregory on the bench and won the 2000 national title. He found success at Dayton, going 172–94 with two NCAA Tournament appearances and an NIT championship.
But his stint at Georgia Tech was ugly. Gregory went 76–86 overall and 27-61 in conference play during his five seasons.
South Florida, located in Tampa, is a member of the American Athletic Conference. USF finished 7-23 (1-17 AAC) this season. Coach Orlando Antigua was fired in January.
