It was an image that touched hearts all over the world.
Wisconsin resident John Unger and his senior dog Schoep went viral in 2012 when a photo of Unger cradling the feeble dog circled the web. The 19-year-old dog suffered from hip dysplasia and arthritis and Unger found that floating in the waters of Lake Superior eased Schoep’s discomfort.
A friend of Unger’s who is a professional photographer caught the loving moment on camera. The image quickly went viral and has been viewed millions of times.
Schoep died in 2013 at the age of 20.
Unger had a special bond with Schoep, whom he adopted from a shelter when he was battling depression, and credits the dog with saving his life. Unger knew it would take time before he was ready to allow another dog to steal his heart.
Recently, Unger announced on his Facebook page that he has adopted a new dog. According to Unger, Bear is a 1-year-old, 70-pound Akita/shepherd/Labrador retriever mix.
Unger wrote on Facebook that he is a very happy man, claiming that he is whole once again.
The post quickly went viral, receiving over 77,000 likes.
