Hark, is that a Christmas tree I hear singing?

It's not Christmas magic, but for a week this month the Christmas tree at New Hope Baptist Church comes alive with the sounds of music.

For the last three decades, about 80 members of the church’s various choirs have taken their places amid the branches of a 50-foot “living Christmas tree” for the annual holiday concert.

“This is not for a person afraid of heights,” said John Conrad, associate pastor of music and mission.

The tree - which contains steps and scaffolding - is filled with thousands of computerized lights.

The free program runs from Dec. 8 through Dec. 13.

In all, it takes about 400 people to put on the annual program, which last year drew 12,000 people. It includes an orchestra, special effects, a play and live animals, including a camel. Joseph, Mary and Jesus also make an appearance.

“We love doing this,” said Conrad. “There are two purposes - one to worship and the other, to witness.”

The concert will be held at 551 New Hope Rd. The times are 7 p.m. Tuesday through Friday; and 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
