The Friends of Georgia Archives and History will hold its annual meeting 9:30 a.m.-noon Sept. 26 at the Georgia Archives.

The event will kick off with a continental breakfast. At 10, the meeting will begin with the election of new board members and an annual report from President Timothy Crimmins, followed by the annual report of Christopher Davidson, Georgia Archives director.

The featured speaker will be Glenn Eskew from Georgia State University, presenting a lecture with videos on Johnny Mercer’s popular songs, based on his award-winning book, “Johnny Mercer: Southern Songwriter for the World.”

Scottish research workshop

A workshop on clan and family history in the Scottish Highlands featuring Graeme Mackenzie will be held 9:45 a.m.-3:45 p.m. Oct. 10 on the Columbus State University campus, just off I-185 in Columbus.

The speaker will cover the history of the Scottish Highlands and its clans; clans, septs and surnames in the Highlands; and tracing your ancestors in the Highlands. He also will do a Q&A session. When planning to buy a long-published genealogy or local history book, check to see if the author still has them for sale. You could save money that way. Many books offered on eBay at high prices are sometimes still for sale by the original author at not much more than the original price.
