Georgia Tech football coach Paul Johnson said Tuesday that school officials have discussed the possibility of scheduling an extra game on Oct. 7 — the week before the Yellow Jackets are scheduled to clash with Miami.
Georgia Tech had its Week 3 game against Central Florida cancelled due to Hurricane Irma. Miami also had a game cancelled due to the storm. The Yellow Jackets and Hurricanes were originally scheduled to meet Thursday, Oct. 5, but that game was pushed back to Oct. 7 when the Miami’s contest with Florida State was postponed and their schedule shuffled.
As a result, Johnson said Georgia Tech has discussed trying to find a willing partner to give the Yellow Jackets a 12th game this season. According to a story by Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, doing so would likely require multiple other games to be rescheduled in order to accommodate the schedule of an FBS opponent. Johnson said he would rather not play an FCS team because the Yellow Jackets already played and beat one FCS opponent, Jacksonville State, and a second win against a non-FBS school wouldn't count toward bowl eligibility.
Johnson also said he didn’t like the idea of scheduling a game on December 2, the date of the ACC Championship game.
“Probably not so much there,” Johnson said. “We’d like to be in that game.”
