The works of art being unveiled at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Westside Cultural Arts Center are truly one of kind.
In October, 35 models, some of whom are breast cancer survivors, volunteered to have their torsos artistically painted and then photographed. The resulting exhibit is themed “Breast Strokes: Hadassah Bares All for A.R.T. (Awareness, Research & Treatment).” The works will be shown for the first time at Saturday’s “Big Reveal” gala.
Proceeds will benefit Hadassah’s breast cancer research.
"We all have a family member or friend who has been affected by breast cancer, and one of every eight women will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime," said Greater Atlanta chapter chairwoman Phyllis Cohen. "Hadassah's ongoing research is working toward finding a cure for this devastating disease."
The event's honoree is community leader Joanie Shubin, a life member of Hadassah and breast cancer survivor. The honorary chairwoman is Susan Casella, a registered nurse and the breast health education and support service coordinator at Northside Hospital Cancer Institute.
Hadassah, founded in 1912, is the largest women’s Zionist Jewish membership organization in the United States, boasting 330,000 members. The Greater Atlanta chapter, founded in 1916, focuses on issues of women’s health and family well-being.
Saturday’s event will feature cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and desserts along with a silent auction. The live auction will feature a vacation at a Montana ranch and a stay at a penthouse in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
The artists and photographers who collaborated on the project will attend, and the original pieces of art will be available for purchase, as will a poster featuring all 35 images.
Tickets are available online at www.hadassah.org/atlanta/breaststrokes/buytickets or at the door. The address is 760 10th St. N.W., Atlanta.
