Pity the poor football fan. Come early January, the games will have dwindled down to a precious few. College's national championship game takes place on Jan. 11th in Glendale, Arizona; after that, it's a long-and-long situtation until the Super Bowl, is played on Feb. 7th in Santa Clara, California.
What’s that you say? There are all those NFL playoff games leading up to the Super Bowl?
That's true. Of course it's also true that there are three teams right now with identical 6-7 records who stand a good chance of making those playoffs. And also, the Falcons. 'nuff said.
Sigh. If only there was a chance to watch some proven football winners this January. Without having to fly to Glendale or Santa Clara. Without having to shell out a dime, in fact.
Enter, like Tom Brady with an extra set of downs (that's a very good thing, in case you didn't know) the Atlanta Fulton Public Library System. On five consecutive Fridays beginning on Jan. 8th, it will show football-themed movies at the Central Library at 1 p.m. The screenings, which are taking place in celebration of this 50th go-round of the Super Bowl (not to mention the general all-around terrific-ness of public libraries) are free and open to all ages.
Here’s the movie lineup, along with the star players:
Jan. 8 – Invincible – Mark Wahlberg
Jan. 15 – We Are Marshall – Matthew McConaughey
Jan. 22 – The Blind Side – Sandra Bullock
Jan. 29 – Brian’s Song – James Caan and Billie Dee Williams - note, this is the original, total tearjerker!
Feb. 5 - The Express – Dennis Quaid and Rob Brown
Adding to the fun, two of the flicks — "The Blind Side," for which Bullock won the Best Actress Oscar, and "We Are Marshall," for which McConaughey was, well, McConaughey — were largely filmed in and around Atlanta. So even if you aren't ready for some more football, you can definitely have fun picking out familiar places around town.
The Central Library is located at One Margaret Mitchell Square in downtown Atlanta. For more information, call 404-730-1700 or go to afpls.org. On the web site, you can also check out the full calendar of events throughout the 36-branch system.
